The Ten-Episode Series Is A Co-Production Of Universal Television, Carnival Films & Television, Flame Ventures, Playground, And Sky Living


UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. & LONDON -- July 24, 2012 - NBC and Sky Living today announced the co-production of "Dracula," a provocative new drama series version of the classic Bram Stoker novel starring Golden Globe winner Jonathan Rhys Meyers ("The Tudors," "Elvis") in the title role. It was announced jointly today by Universal Television Executive Vice President Bela Bajaria, and Sky's Head of Drama, Anne Mensah.


"Dracula" is from the producers behind the critically acclaimed, Emmy Award-winning hit "Downton Abbey," Carnival Films & Television, along with Flame Ventures and Playground, and will begin production later this year.


The 10-episode series introduces Dracula as he arrives in London, posing as an American entrepreneur who maintains that he wants to bring modern science to Victorian society. In reality, he hopes to wreak revenge on the people who ruined his life centuries earlier. There's only one circumstance that can potentially thwart his plan: Dracula falls hopelessly in love with a woman who seems to be a reincarnation of his dead wife.


Based on a script by co-executive producer Cole Haddon, "Dracula" will be executive-produced by former president of HBO Films and Emmy winner Colin Callender ("The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby") for Playground, Tony Krantz ("24", "Sports Night") for Flame Ventures, Gareth Neame ("Downton Abbey") for Carnival Films & Television (part of NBCUniversal International Television Production), Anne Mensah for Sky, and Universal Television. Reece Pearson from Flame Ventures is also co-executive producer.

It is a timeless tale with relevant, surprising twists and turns with the exquisite Jonathan Rhys Meyers in the marquee role."

"Dracula" is the latest in a series of co-productions embarked on by Sky, with previous projects including "Treasure Island" and "Strike Back." Sky last year signaled its commitment to original production by increasing its investment in original British content by 50 per cent over the next three years. By 2014, Sky expects to invest £600 million a year on home grown content across its portfolio of channels.

You did the right thing, Trufa. Sorry, my mistake. And speaking about this great news, it's so refreshing to read good things about him. Very important people are involved in this project and Jonny has had very good press around it. Yesterday I read this "star JRM is a good start". It can't be better.

For months and months there is no news on Jonny and for one day I don't read anything on facebook, twitter or the forum and there is huge news! But great news it is. I never watched Dracula and vampire stuff, well except for Supernatural, but I think I am going to like this project. I believe it will be made with style. And Jonny would be great in this, I am sure of that.

"NBC has ordered a new “Dracula” series from writer Cole Haddon and the production team behind “Downton Abbey.”
It's the program's new showrunner who promises to make the series more than just another trendy vampire project.

The new show will be set in 1890s London. Dracula poses as an American entrepreneur hoping to bring modern science to the Victorian society. His true motive, though, is to exact revenge on those who destroyed his life many years before. Jonathan Rhys Meyers of "The Tudors" fame is set to star as the titular Dracula.

During the summer's TCA presentation, NBC Entertainment president Robert Greenblatt stated, "In the world of ‘Twilight’ and ‘True Blood’ and all the contemporized stories, we thought we'd go back to the original.” Understandably, some viewers were probably thinking this will just end up being another "Vampire Diaries.”

Well, have no fear.

Last week, NBC announced that it has brought in "Carnivalé" creator Daniel Knauf to serve as show runner and head writer. Still skeptical that the series will feature glittery, emoting vampires? Daniel helped squelch those fears recently on Twitter.

When asked if the series would watered down since it is airing on a network instead of a cable channel, Knauf wrote, "Believe me, we’ll be pushing the outside of the broadcast envelope as far as content goes.”

And with regards to the metrosexualization of recent vampire fare, he also puts that assumption to rest.

“And not wimpy post-millennium, self-actualizing, oh-so-tortured, Abercrombie-&-Fitch, ‘sparkling’ Dracula. Victorian badass Dracula.” He also promises “55% sex, 30%violence, 10% kinky, 5% smoldering.”

Hopefully, NBC will not meddle too much and will give Knauf free reign to work his magic. The series is set to debut next year."
